January 25, 2019 by Pierre Bouilliez
With the new year, come new resolutions and so a new you. Maybe you are wondering what you could do to improve your life? How to, this year, finally make that biggest change you wanted to do in your life for a long time? Or simply how to boost your life?
In this blog, you will see 9 simple actions that changed my life and hopefully will do the same for yours.
I quit my corporate job a few years ago because I felt like I wasn’t entirely myself. It was like I felt that my inner self was in a cage and I needed to open that cage. I knew something had to change in my life. So I went for a walk, then many other walks followed, I took some time to think, to read and to gather what could make my life more meaningful.
This below is my gathered thoughts, it’s what I wanted to share with you. A few tips that could boost your life. This is what works for me but as everyone is unique, you might have a different tip to boost your life. Share it in the comment section below so we can make this list together.
Take care of yourself
This is definitely the number 1 tip to have a meaningful life. You need to make time to take care of yourself. To be really yourself, you need to be comfortable with who you are. Take care of your physical body and your spiritual body. Way too much, we tend to wait to reach a critical point when we are more vulnerable to act instead of taking a few hours per week to improve our lives. And if you think you cannot take some time for yourself, read the quote below twice:
The time to relax is when you don't have time for it.
One simple action to achieve this tip is to book 1 hour per week for yourself. Here are some nice ideas on how to spend some valuable time with yourself.
What would you do if you had no fear? Or what would you do if you knew it was your last day? Sometimes, it’s good to remember to ourselves that we are mortals, knowing that we could lose everything one day, is what pushes us to move. And this is what helps us to leave the comfort zone. Life is too short to say to ourselves “I will not do this”. You have the power to do anything when you tell your brain that you can do this.
If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
One simple action you can do when you are scared is to countdown from 5 (great advice from Mel Robbins) and at 1 you will have the energy to overpass your fear.
Connect with people
We are social creatures, we can only survive when we are together. Of course, not everyone could be super social, some people are more than other. This is what I called the Sociability Vase. When we are in contact of others, this vase is filled with water and when we are alone, the water flows outside of the vase. Depending on the person, this vase can take more time to empty itself. All this means, if you feel like you don’t want to see anyone, it’s good for some time but don’t isolate yourself completely. Go meet new people who share your passions.
I surround myself with good people who make me feel great and give me positive energy.
One simple action is to attend events of topics that interests you, do more of what you like, be part of communities, connect with friends,
Create the world you want to live in / Make a Change
When we think about making a change, we think about big changes, but every change even the smallest one can make a difference. If you don’t like something, you can change it, don’t accept the status quo. As Steve Jobs said:
Life can be so much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call 'life' was made up by people who were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.
And it’s totally true, we tend to think that we cannot influence the world, but you can. I believe that everyone shapes the world by his presence, everyone is part of it and everyone influences it. Give your life a sense of purpose.
Some simple actions you can do right now is to smile around you and spread some positivity. For example, you can use the app Uloo.me to send motivational cards across the world and boost someone’s life. You can also put some motivational stickers around you to boost your city.
Find a passion
This is one of the most important tips of this list. A passion is like “home for your mind”. It could be playing an instrument, riding a bike, painting or whatever it is that creates a nice feeling in your mind. As a child, we develop some passions that we tend to lose when we grow up, but it’s one of the most powerful tools to regenerate your mind. For me, a passion is even a way to be mindful, when I was riding the bike, my mind is only focused on what I am doing now, if my mind wanders, I could fall so I need to be entirely focused on what I am doing.
Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.
One simple action if you don’t know your passion is to look back at what you liked when you were a child or to read a list of passions and try the ones that you like. Always keep looking.
Ask for help
This is also a nice one: ask for help. Sometimes, we are too afraid to ask for help or to proud to admit that we don’t know something. Actually, when we ask for help, we can move faster and achieve more. It doesn’t matter what others will think of you if you ask for something, you and only you needs to care about this. If the answer is “no” at least you have tried. You will be astonished how many people are ready to help you.
None of us can make it alone
Today, ask someone a question that is in your mind.
Organise your life
Initially, I was not a big fan of this one as it sounded like everyday would be the same day… and I am not a big fan of having days that look the same. I only discovered that it was a powerful tool when I gave it a try. Once again, everyone is different, you have to find what is your own-best schedule. I like to plan my weeks on Sunday evening, so when I wake up, I know exactly what I am going to do. I also plan time to read, to learn new stuff, and to chill. Having busy days is what keeps us away from bad habits. It doesn’t mean that every week is the same, it means that I slightly change my routine to keep me excited every week (also recommended in the book of Sadguru).
It is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.
Start by adding once per week a routine for something, it could be a morning routine or a dedicated time in your calendar to learn something new and accomplish your personal growth objectives.
